Adoption Process:
A dog or cat may come to P.L.U.T.O. in a number of ways. We sometimes have pets that are found as strays, some have been surrendered by their current owner, some are ill and need some TLC and some are rescued from another shelter. All are provided safety, love and commitment until the pet's forever home is found.
Once a pet is accepted it is checked medically by our veterinarian as necessary and a plan is made for spay/neuter if not already done. All vaccinations are brought up to date.
All dogs are tested for heartworm.
Cats and kittens in the care of P.L.U..O. Rescue are tested for feline AIDS and Leukemia. They are fully vaccinated, wormed, treated for fleas and earmites. They are also spayed/neutered and microchipped if old enough.
There is a $100 donation which includes all of the above as long as the animal is of the proper age. Usually 4 months and older. Depending on the age of the animal the $100 doantion covers what was done prior to adoption and the spay/neuter and microchip.
A pre-adoption form and prescreening interview followed by a home visit
is required prior to adoption.
Our cats have a lovely space at our Sharrots Road Catroom where they stay until they are adopted. A cat may also be fostered at a P.L.U.T.O volunteers home. Dogs may be sheltered at the Staten Island Veterinary Group or at the home of a P.L.U.T.O volunteer.
During the week the cats available for adoption can be seen by appointment at our Sharrots Road Catroom, 654A Sharrotts Road, Staten Island, NY 10309. Please call Pat at 347-210-1725. For inquiries on dogs please e-mail plutorescue@aol.com
You can also meet our dogs available for adoption every Saturday from 12noon to 3PM at
PETCO, 165 Bricktown Way, Suite 1C, Staten Island (In the Bricktown Commons across from Michael's) If someone is interested in a pet they should inquire at the adoption desk where they may fill out a Pre-adoption Form. Filling out this form does not gurarantee adoption.
There is a $300 donation for pure bred dogs, designer breeds, puppies and $200 for mixed breeds. The donation includes the first worming and first vaccine for puppies, the combo test, first worming and first vaccine for kittens less than 4 months old. The donation also includes the Spay / Neuter surgery only and the microchip. There are additional expenses (approximately $200) such as pain meds and antibiotics that are needed with the Spay / Neuter surgery that are not included in the donation and is the sole responsibility of the adopter.
All prospective adopting applications are reviewed. Where there is a potential for adoption, a home visit will be scheduled. The purpose of the home visit is to ensure safety, love and commitment for the pets in our care. In the event of an adoption, final paperwork will be completed at the home visit. The adoption donation will be paid and arrangements will be made to transfer the pet.
*We do not ship animals. We only adopt out to the tri-state area.*.
